Primary Shakespeare Company

As it’s Shakespeare week, I thought I’d share some pictures from the work I’ve been doing with the Primary Shakespeare Company over the last year. They are an amazing organisation who work with primary schools, introducing children to Shakespeare through workshops and ultimately their own performances in a Shakespeare festival with other schools. These shots are all from their Hamlet festival; each school prepares a different section of the play and then come together with other primary schools to present a full version of the story to an audience. The play is abridged but the language is not simplified. The commitment from the children in terms of performance is evident from the photos. Their engagement with the play and comprehension of the text after the programme is extraordinary and puts paid to the idea that young children can’t understand Shakespeare or the language is too hard. They grasp the universal themes within the plays amazingly quickly (and a bit of poison and sword fighting also go down very well!). Please look at their website for more information. They are still in their infancy but are developing a fantastic reputation.
